Meal scanning, explained

By The Comfrey Team

Logging food is where most people quit. Searching a database for “grilled chicken, medium portion, maybe?” is tedious enough that the habit dies in a week. Comfrey’s meal scanner exists to delete that step.

From photo to macros

Point the camera at your plate and Comfrey does three things:

  1. Looks — it identifies the foods and rough portions in the photo.
  2. Estimates — it returns calories and macros for what it sees.
  3. Reconciles — it cross-checks the calorie total against the protein, carbs, and fat so the numbers stay internally consistent.

The result lands in your day in seconds, already split into macros.

Getting the best results

  • Shoot from a slight angle, not straight down, so portions read clearly.
  • Get the whole plate in frame and avoid harsh shadows.
  • Adjust anything that looks off — your edits make your day more accurate.

It’s an estimate, not a food scale — but for staying consistent day to day, fast and close beats precise and abandoned.
